KAHN: He says Brazilians should celebrate that. GUILHERME CASAROES: Even though there were very powerful people - people in office, in power - plotting against democracy, somehow democratic institutions have worked and have been able to save democracy from a complete meltdown. And, you know, that is quite serious in this country with a history of military dictatorships. He was hopeful, despite learning how the former right-wing leader had tried to undermine Brazil's democratic consensus. I want to play you a bit of a conversation I had with Brazilian political scientist Guilherme Casaroes. But he did add he didn't think the coup attempt could have happened without Bolsonaro. He said he hopes the investigation against Bolsonaro is professional and unbiased. The current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who Bolsonaro lost to, also spoke out. KAHN: Bolsonaro, as always, denied any wrongdoing and says he's being politically persecuted. INSKEEP: How is he responding to this latest police raid that grabs his passport? And like Trump, Bolsonaro is also facing many more cases that could land him in jail. Bolsonaro has already been barred from running for office until 2030 by electoral authorities. Unlike Trump, who was - the two were close allies when they were both in office. Bolsonaro has denied he had anything to do with that attack. When that didn't happen, the supporters ransacked the capital on January 8 of last year. His supporters spent months camping out in front of military barracks, hoping the army would intervene and overturn the results of the election. He claimed it was voter fraud and that Brazil's all-electronic voter system was defective. Can you now fit this into the context of what we already knew about his failed effort to overturn his defeat in 2022? So these things didn't necessarily happen, but he's editing a document that is the plan. And that edit included the arrest of a justice of the Supreme Court. At one point, police say Bolsonaro edited a document that outlined how the coup would unfold, including which leaders in the government would be arrested and who would not. And the level at which Bolsonaro orchestrated much of - police says was a vast conspiracy to overturn the election results is new, too. They include military personnel, his former defense minister, his former justice minister and a national security adviser. The investigation names dozens of people who worked with Bolsonaro, allegedly well before he lost his reelection bid back in 2022. And the federal police then unveiled its case of Bolsonaro's alleged participation in an attempted coup in this 130-page detailed documents which has a lot of stunning evidence, Steve - much that we have not heard before. KAHN: Well, first, Bolsonaro was not arrested yesterday. INSKEEP: NPR South America correspondent Carrie Kahn is in Rio de Janeiro. Yesterday, federal police showed up at his residence and forced him to hand over his passport. Ex Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing mounting evidence that points to him participating in efforts to overturn the results of an election that ultimately unseated him. No, we're not talking about Donald Trump, but he was friends with him. We now have the story of a former president who made false claims of a stolen election.

They have food and water and a safe place to live. They are going to try to mate all the time. Giving them the nest was the biggest problem. ( got a graphic for that? The WV zebra finch cage?)Īs everyone has pretty much already said, take away the nest. Make sure if you do decide to breed them that you can get homes - I had a man literally shove 6 barely weaned zebras at me - he was crying because his bred so much and he couldn't get rid of them~! When you breed them on purpose, you want to have all the equipment necessary: nest, safe nesting material, quarantine cage or tank with proper heating device, hand feeding food and a syringe in case you have to feed the babies or, heaven forbid, a parent dies. You haven't had them long, they are not settled in, I assume you haven't run a full course health protocol. Since texts are composed of a network of connections at both local and global levels, their analyses depend on the possibility to reconstruct the relation between global and local dimensions.įor this reason, François Rastier suggests that in order to capture the meaning of a text, the semantic analysis must identify semantic forms at different semantic levels. Hjelmslev, the concept of “text” is conceived above all as a process and a “relational hierarchy.” Furthermore, according to Hjelmslev, textuality consists in the idea of “mutual dependencies,” composing a whole which makes the text an “absolute totality” to be interpreted by readers and analyzed by linguists. In semiotics, the theory of language proposed by Louis T. Since the 1970s, analyzing connections between texts and contexts, textual pragmatics, has been an important source of inspiration for textual semiotics. Here the text is presented as a unit captured in a communication process, “a communicative unit.” Considered from a pragmatic point of view, every single unit composing a text constitutes an instruction for meaning. Textual pragmatics deals with a more complex problem: that of the text conceived as an empirical object. But according to Robert-Alain De Beaugrande and Wolfgang Ulrich Dressler, cohesion and coherence are only two of the seven principles of textuality (the other five being intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality). In fact, to be interpreted as a whole, the elements composing the text need to be coherent to each other. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan define textuality through the concepts of “cohesion” and “coherence.” Cohesion is a necessary condition of textuality, because it enables text to be perceived as a whole, but it’s not sufficient to explain it. In linguistics, the definition of textuality depends on the definition of text. In textual linguistics, textuality presents as a global quality of text issued from the interlacing of the sentences composing it. In textual linguistics, “text” is considered at the same time as an abstract object, issued from a specific theoretical approach, and a concrete object, a linguistic phenomenon starting the process of analysis. The concept of “text” also presupposes two other concepts: from a generative point of view, it involves a proceeding by which something becomes a text ( textualization) from an interpretative point of view, it involves a proceeding by which something can be interpreted as a text ( textuality). This duplicity characterizes the development of the concept in the 20th century.Īccording to different theories of language, there are also different understandings of “text”: a restricted use as written text, an extensive use as written and spoken text, and an expanded use as any written, verbal, gestural, or visual manifestation. Indeed, text presents itself both as an empirical object subject to analysis and an abstract object constructed by the analysis itself. The concept of “text” is ambiguous: it can identify at the same time a concrete reality and an abstract one. Bonus: Transfer Duo Mobile App Data to New iOS Device with Backup Tool. How to Add a New Device from Duo Mobile App Some French loan words are still spelled in the French way others have been changed.Įnglish spelling reform has been proposed by many people since Webster, such as George Bernard Shaw, who proposed a new phonetic alphabet for English. Loan words come with their own (foreign) spelling. The root causes of spelling variation are historical. An example of the real problems in English orthography is the word ending -ough, which is pronounced several different ways: tough, bough, cough. But, because his efforts did not address some of the most glaring problems, his variations make little difference to the way the language is used. Webster did create a slightly different identity for American English. Webster's dictionary contained seventy thousand words, of which twelve thousand had never appeared in a published dictionary before. His main reason was to help children learn to read and write. He also changed tongue to tung: that did not stick. At first he kept the u in words like colour or favour but dropped it in later editions. In his dictionary, he chose s over c in words like defense, he changed the re to er in words like center, he dropped one of the Ls in traveler. In the course of this, he proposed a number of simplifications in spelling. Noah Webster (1758–1843) wrote a Grammar, a Spelling book, and finally an American dictionary of the English language. This all gives rise to problems of spelling.īritish and American English ĭifferences between American English and British English spelling came about mainly as the result of one man. And English also has other problems: sounds that can be written in different ways, and spelling which can be pronounced in different ways. Therefore, all alphabets have sounds which are difficult to represent with the letters in use. It must serve everyone who speaks the language, and it does this by keeping the spelling similar from one time to another. It has a different function, and is produced mechanically. A written language will always be less flexible than its spoken parent. This is very obvious with English, as the pronunciation is so different in different parts of the world. A spoken language varies from place to place and from time to time. The other reason that alphabets never exactly fit languages is dialect. The English language uses 22 to 26 consonant phonemes. The English alphabet has only three consonants which have one sound, cannot be produced by other combinations and are never silent: n, r and v. A shorter alphabet works by using two or three letters for a single sound, or one letter for several sounds. The Georgian language has a total of 41 letters. Įnglish would need about 20 vowels to represent the vowel phonemes (~sounds) in common use, p237 and some languages do have more letters for vowels. All the alphabets in use in Europe today stand in direct or indirect relation to the ancient Greek". "The importance of the Greeks in the history of alphabetic writing is paramount. This choice influenced all later alphabets: The ancient Greeks, who were the first to use letters for vowels, decided to use only a few letters for their vowel sounds. In English there are far more vowel sounds than vowels. One reason for this is that there are always more sounds than letters. The first manuscripts in Old English were written using the Latin alphabet. p970 English orthography Įnglish orthography, or English spelling, is the way the 26 letters of the alphabet are used to write down the 36 (IPA) sounds of English. The word which is "merry" today was spelled in about 30 ways in written sources from the 9th to the 16th century. Gradually the number of alternative spellings began to drop. They had to decide how particular words would be spelled in their books. English orthography was the work of the early printers. Some languages have someone to decide the correct spelling, such as the Académie française. In English, spelling is a problem for all learners, and is the main issue in orthography. Orthography may also include rules about punctuation, capitalization, and diacritics (e.g. Orthography is an official or correct way to write a particular language.
